The following are the main functions of the VascoDe CMI Mobile Wikipedia service

1.   Initiating Wikipedia Service

From a mobile device

In order to access the CMI Mobile Wikipedia service directly from your mobile device, the service is supported on most of the Indian mobile networks:

  • Please dial the following number +91-82-8502-2731
  • You will receive a busy tone and will be disconnected automatically and in return you will receive the main menu of the service, see below screen capture Fig. 1.
  • The call is not answered, so there should be no cost
  • The Wikipedia service is free… so feel free to forward the links to other mobile users

2.   Enter Wikipedia Query

From the Wikpedia main menu “Wiki Query” (Fig. 1) you select the “Answer” option (or Reply in some phones) and then will receive a screen to input the Wiki query. In some phones in order to enter text, you will need to select # key and hold it down for approx. 1 sec. and then you will enter the alpha mode (select and hold # key to return to numeric mode)

Figure 2 – Enter term query text

In this example the user entered the term “Turtle”, this query can be sent either by pressing the mobile device “send” button or by selecting the “send” option from the phone menu options (see Fig 2 the option at the bottom in the center)

VascoDe CMI will return the “Turtle” term from Wikipedia (see Fig. 3)

3.   Query Result Navigation

Once the term was received user can select the following option:

“1″ – back to main Wikipedia menu in order to enter new query

“99″ – next page, receive the second page of the current selected term. You can select “99″ to view next page as long is there is additional text regarding this term on Wikipedia (see Fig 4 and 5)

“77″ – previous page

“88″ – help, receive the various short cuts available at this state

“00″ – from any screen you can enter “00″, which will bring you back to main Wikipedia menu in order to enter new query.

Figure 4 – Enter “99″ for page down

Figure 5 – Receive term’s second page text

4.   General

VascoDe attempts to provide the best term on the first interaction (saving navigation and time).

From any menu you can enter “88″ for help. the context aware help menu will provide you with all the relevant shortcuts.

From any menu you can enter “00″ to bring you back to main Wikipedia menu in order to enter new query.

The CMI holds your session state for 10 minutes so if your session is disconnected for any reason you can immediately dial the service again and you will return to the same menu screen you were in before the disconnect. If you attempt to reconnect after 10 minutes you will return to the main Wikipedia query menu.

If you enter data that is not valid for the current menu, you will receive a message “Function not available” with a menu option “1 – ok” Once you enter “1″ you will go back to the previous menu or you can select to enter “00″ which will bring you back the main menu.

At any stage you can end the session by selecting the mobile device’s exit option from the menu or by clicking on the “red” hang-up button on the phone.

5.   Troubleshooting

I call the number, however do not receive a CMI Wikipedia menu in return

1. Try again, however if the error is consistent then most likely it means that your local mobile operator is not supporting the service (some mobile operators block USSD messages).

2. Try using a mobile device from another mobile operator

I receive a CMI Wikipedia menu, however when enter the reply information and send it, I receive an error message

1. Try again, however if the error is consistent then most likely it means that your local mobile operator is not supporting the service (some mobile operators block USSD messages).

2. Try using a mobile device from another mobile operator

I am trying to enter the input, however nothing happens

In most phones you need to first select to answer/reply and then you will receive an input screen, once you enter your input click on the send button

I can’t enter text

In some phones in order to enter text, you will need to select # key and hold it down for approx. 1 sec. and then you will enter the alpha mode (select and hold # key to return to numeric mode)

I would like to enter queries in other languages

The VascoDe CMI service supports other languages, however this free service is currently connected only to the English Wikipedia version
